Masamichi Kogai, CEO of Mazda, has stated that his company isn’t currently working a sports car larger than the MX-5. During an interview with Automotive News, Kogai was asked if the company had plans for a “larger sports car entry”, to which he simply stated no. This seemingly rules out a new rotary-powered sports car in the near future and contradicts an August report in Japan’s Holiday Auto, which claimed that the company was prepping an RX-7 successor for 2020. The CEO stated that the company is undertaking rotary engine development in order “to overcome any issues we have with…

Volkswagen just announced a new E-Golf with a 50 percent improvement in all-electric range. But it doesn’t hold a candle to Kreisel Electric’s aftermarket upgrade, which more than triples the original E-Golf’s range. Kreisel Electric is a startup based in Austria. The company retrofits European electric vehicles with their own battery technology. This E-Golf started with the 2016 model’s 24.2-kWh battery, producing about 83 miles of range. Now, it’s packing a 55.7-kWh battery pack with a range north of 200 miles, which puts it more in line with the upcoming 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV.   Kreisel’s advancements come from the…

Volkswagen will not offer new diesel models in the US, the company’s brand chief has announced this week, ahead of more stringent regulations that will come into effect by the end of the decade. Herbert Diess, Volkswagen’s brand chief, told the German publication: “We are working under the assumption that we will no longer…

You know what the best wake-up call in the world is? It’s not your favorite radio station, nor is it the tender embrace of family or even a puppy licking your face until you stir. It is, in fact, a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 with 612 horsepower singing the song of its people. I know this, because to get to the new Mercedes-AMG E63, I flew from London to Portugal on two hours’ sleep. When I plonked myself into the car, I was barely awake, but when I fired it up, brain caffeine happened. Tech Talks Before we get to the…

Let’s be honest. Buying a near new car can be daunting. Having to spend an entire Saturday traipsing around a dozen dealerships and then coming back even more confused than before is no-one’s idea of fun. This is perhaps why car auctions are becoming increasingly popular. In recent times, the prices of classic cars sold at auction have been substantially higher than the reserve, but when buying used cars that are practically new, it can be quite the opposite. This was evident with a 2011 Ferrari 458 at a recent Manheim auction in Melbourne – even though it was passed in…
